1 Timothy 1:15 (NKJV) This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
II. Why we don’t forgive ourselves.
A. Not accept God’s forgiveness
B. We think we know something about our sin.
C. We are performance based.
D. We think we are exempt.
E. Expect to sin again.
F. Confronted by the consequences of our sin.
G. Low self-esteem.
III. Steps to Self-forgiveness I John 1:8,9,10
A. Admit to God I am guilty.
B. Confess you have not forgiven yourself.
C. Confess I am in emotional bondage.
D. Ask God to forgive you.

John 8:34-36 (NKJV) 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

I. Forgive
A. Forgiveness is a choice

14Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

B. God will take care of the person who hurt you.

Romans 12:19-20 (NKJV) 19Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

II. Develop a Forgiving Spirit
A. Forgiveness is an act of will
B. Depend on the power and the person of the Holy Spirit
1. Pray
2. Confess
3. Then declare to the Lord by faith I am free of this person. James 4:7-10

III. Joseph (A life of forgiveness) Genesis 45:4-15
A. Hated by his brothers
B. Misunderstood by his father
C. Sold by his brothers

F. Forgotten and remembered (Genesis 45:4-15)

IV. The Key to a Forgiving Spirit
A. See it as God’s plan

Romans 8:28 (NKJV) 28And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

B. Perfect an area of your life
1. Make you stinger
2. Train to have a forgiving spirit
3. May even help the other person

C. How many times do we forgive?

Mathew 18:21-22 (NKJV) 21Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

C. Bear much fruit. . .So you will be my disciple
